ESKHARA

greek – hearth: pan of hot coals

YOU ARE THE CULMINATION OF HISTORY
THOUSANDS OF YEARS WHISPERED
INTO EVERY CELL
CENTURY’S WORTH OF ANCIENT SAGAS
SLEEPING IN YOUR NEURONS
IN LANGUAGES YOU DON’T REMEMBER

YOU ARE THE PRODUCT
OF NATURE AND NURTURE
THE TEMPLE OF YOUR BEING
BUILT UPON A FOUNDATION
OF NUCLEOTIDES
A FRAME BUILT BY TRIBAL CUSTOMS

YOU ARE A PATCHWORK QUILT
OF VIRTUES AND VICES
PIECED TOGETHER IN THE DARK
BY TREMBLING HANDS BUT DARLING,
YOU ARE THE BLANKET
THAT KEEPS ME WARM AT NIGHT

YOU ARE A TESTAMENT TO TIME
THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE
WRITTEN IN BURNT FIBERS
RAISED LIKE BRAILLE, SHINING LIKE
THE INSIDES OF A SEASHELL,
SPECTERS ECHOING IN YOUR VEINS

WE ARE MAPS OF SCAR TISSUE
CHARTING THE COORDINATES
OF OUT TRAUMAS, SEE HERE;
THE SCRAPE OF METAL ON ICE
IS ENOUGH TO LEAVE ME BREATHLESS
AND LONGING FOR POPPIES

WE ARE A LEGACY OF SURVIVAL
DEVISED BY WHATEVER FATE
WE COULD STEAL FOR OURSELVES

O DARLING
IT WILL TAKE MORE THAN THESE WOUNDS
TO BREAK US
